Colchicine is prescription drug. It is sold from the pharmacy store only in the presence of written instructions known as prescription from a licensed healthcare provider.
Colchicine is pronounced as KOL-chi-seen
Colchicine belongs to hyperuricemia and gout preparations.
When not to take colchicine
Colchicine should not be used in patients hypersensitive to it. Colchicine should not be given to patients with kidney problems. Do not use colchicines if you are taking any of the below drugs ritonavir, clarithromycin, erythromycin, cyclosporine and cholesterol lowering drugs like atorvastatin

Colchicine belongs to FDA pregnancy category D. This means that colchicine can harm an unborn baby and cause birth defects if used during pregnancy. Do not use colchicine with out your doctor consent however its use is justified if the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or are planning for conception.
Lactating women:
Colchicine passes into breast milk and harm nursing baby. Do not use colchicine with out the consent from your doctor if you are breastfeeding your child.

Doses for colchicine
Colchicine initially dose is 1 mg then after 1 hour 0.5 mg and repeated every 2-3 hours until pain relief.
Use as directed by your physician, your physician prescribes depending on the severity of disease. Use the complete course of medication as prescribed by your physician even though you feel better after one or two days of usage of medication.
If it is almost the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at same time to cover up the missed dose.

Consult health expert if you notice sever diarrhea, muscle pain, fever, tiredness or allergic reactions like difficult breathing, skin rash and sever dizziness.
Store colchicine at room temp (15 – 30 degrees C / 59 – 86 degrees F). Avoid excessive heat, moisture or direct sunlight, never store in the bathroom.
Keep it out of reach of children. Make sure that any left over portion is disposed off safely.
