Fosinopril is prescription drug. It is sold from the pharmacy store only in the presence of written instructions known as prescription from a licensed healthcare provider
Fosinopril is pronounced as foe SIN oh pril
Common uses of fosinopril
Fosinopril is used in the treatment of hypertension, heart failure. Captopril is also used in the treatment of kidney problems due to diabetes (Diabetes nephropathy)
Do not take fosinopril if you are hypersensitive to it or any other angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor.
Do not take fosinopril if you have history of angioedema (Difficult in breathing, swelling of face, thoat, tongue)
Do not take fosinopril in 2nd and 3 rd semester pregnancy (Refer precautions below for more details)
Children:
Fosinopril is safe and effective to use in children. Clinical studies shown that its actions and elimination is similar to adults.
Old people:
In older people with the age above 65 years with normal hepatic and renal function fosinopril has similar to those younger people.
However with renal and hepatic function compromised, dose adjustment is required, consult your doctor.
Pregnant woman:
First semester: Fosinopril belongs to FDA pregnancy category C. This means that fosinopril may harm an unborn baby if used during pregnancy but potential benefit may warrant use of the drug in pregnant woman despite potential risks. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or are planning for conception.
Second and third semester: Fosinopril belongs to FDA pregnancy category D. This means that fosinopril can harm an unborn baby and cause birth defects if used during pregnancy. Do not use fosinopril with out your doctor consent however its use is justified if the benefits to the mother outweigh the risks. Always inform your doctor if you are pregnant or are planning for conception.
Lactating women:
Fosinopril passes into breast milk and harm nursing baby. Do not use fosinopril with out the consent from your doctor if you are breastfeeding your child.
Other:
Fosinopril should not be given along with diuretics. Discontinue diuretics before fosinopril starts and later can be given after fosinopril stops.
Fosinopril is available in the form of tables
For hypertension: Start with 10mg at bed time and can be increased to 40 mg at bed time as required with direction from your doctor.
For heart failure: Start with 10mg at bed time and can be increased to 40 mg / day
Dose need to be adjusted in case kidney function is not normal.
Over dosage symptoms are
- Hypotension
- Drowsiness
- Fainting
Side effects for fosinopril are
- Dizziness
- Lightheadedness
- Dry cough
- Fainting
- Fever
- Sever sore throat
- Dark color urine
- Stomach pain
- Yellowing of skin and eyes
- Difficult in breathing
Store fosinopril at room temp (25 degrees C / 77 degrees F). Avoid excessive heat, moisture or direct sunlight, never store in the bathroom.
Keep it out of reach of children. Make sure that any left over portion is disposed off safely.
