Candidiasis

Candidiasis, also referred to as oral thrush is an infection caused by the increased growth of a microorganism known as Candida albicans, which is a common inhabitant of the mouth. The condition is characterized by appearance of raised white patches, which can be wiped leaving behind a bleeding surface.1 It is commonly observed in infants and elderly individuals.

The causative factors in others may be:

  • Serious underlying disease, such as cancer or infection with human immunodeficiency virus
  • Dry mouth
  • Dentures (especially if they are not regularly cleaned or fit badly)
  • Smoking
  • Nutritional deficiency for example, iron and/or B-vitamin deficiency 2
Culture of skin swabs and scrapings from the affected part may be required for the diagnosis of candidal infections.3 The underlying cause needs to be treated appropriately. The dentist may prescribe an antifungal mouthwash or lozenges to suck on. These are usually used for 5–10 days.3
