Developmental mile stone for children
Developmental milestones are a set of functional skills that growing children do at a particular age range. Rolling over, sitting, crawling, standing and walking is part of the developmental milestones and provides information related to the child’s development. The milestones are different for each age range.
The following are some of the developmental milestones according to age group:
Developmental delay occurs when a child has the delayed achievement of one or more of these milestones. This may affect the child’s speech and language, fine and gross motor skills, and/or social skills. A child with a global delay will have delays in all areas of development.
It is usually caused by a nonprogressive encephalopathy (brain disease characterized by altered brain function and structure) caused by disorders such as chromosomal abnormalities, infections and metabolic disorders.
Children with developmental delays should be referred to an early childhood intervention program (for children under 3 years of age) for further evaluation and assistance.
